About Public Works Department Manipur

The Public Works Department is one of the very prominent departments of the Government of Manipur and is the statutory authority for designing, planning, monitoring, constructing and undertaking maintenance of public works of the State Government such as Government Buildings, Roads, Bridges etc, irrespective of the source of funds for the same. The Department is headed by the Minister for Public Works and the Secretary to Government at the Secretariat. The present organisational structure of the Public Works Department is mainly divided into various wings based on the nature of works and each wing is under the administrative control of a Chief Engineer. Under the Chief Engineer, there are Superintending Engineers or circle offices. Each circle consists of a number of Divisions under the control of Executive Engineers. The Divisions are divided into subdivisions under the control of Assistant Executive Engineers and the Subdivisions in turn are divided into a number of Sections under charge of Assistant Engineers. PWD also provides infrastructural support for both original and repair works to all the departments directly under the Government of Manipur as well as different semi- Government/Government Undertakings etc. Besides construction of buildings/structures, Bridges, Roads including national and state highways, PWD also carry out works related to electrification, sanitary plumbing, air-conditioning, fire-fighting & detection, lifts, water supply, Generators, EPABX, Information Technology etc. Therefore, one can imagine the huge task assigned to PWD engineers.

Mission

  • Development of Buildings, Roads, Infrasturctures in the public Interest.
  • Enhanced connectivity for remote far flung and isolated areas, including North-East Region (NER), Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas including Tribal areas.
  • Development of National Highways (NHs) Network in the country into a road network of international standards for uninterrupted flow of traffic with enhanced safety features.
  • Establish arrangements for review of Road Transport requirements keeping in view the long term perspective.
  • Improving road safety scenario in the country especially on National Highways.
